Sketches, Doubts, and Dopamine
Made for the 404 page, but I can’t add it for whatever reason. So, I’ll share it here
I’ve been learning to draw for the last two months, and honestly? It’s hard.
If I’m following a tutorial, I can do okay. But the second I sit down to draw something original—poof—my brain forgets how shapes work. I think I need to go way back to the basics… which is just so boring sometimes.
I guess part of the frustration is that I thought this would come more naturally. I’ve always been creative, so I figured drawing would just click. But it hasn’t — not yet. And that weirdly makes me want it even more.
I’m stuck in the middle of two styles, too. Do I want to draw super realistic art, or stick to cute, childlike illustrations? I love simple, adorable drawings—but I also want to add a bit more detail. It’s a work in process. (Like me.)
These are some of the recent drawings I have made and love.
Still, I hope you’ll enjoy this learning journey with me. Maybe it’ll inspire you to try something you gave up on as a kid. Drawing again has helped me more than I expected. It gives me purpose. Every time I finish a project—whether it turns out great or flops—I get that rush of dopamine and a little jolt of pride.
So if you’re picking up a skill later in life, here’s your reminder: don’t give up. It is worth it.
(In case you're curious or want to join the chaos...)
